Illustration
As a child and an art student, I illustrated my stories and letters with personal drawings. When I began to illustrate professionally, though, it was quite by accident. I was finishing a temporary teaching job at a university outside of Houston and wanted to stay in the area. One day I received a call from the Exhibits Department at the Houston Zoo, asking if the school had any promising graduates who might be interested in a job. I made a visit to the zoo grounds to survey their signage, dioramas, and publications, and then went home to create my own portfolio. I got the job as Illustrator/Communications Specialist and spent three years, making drawings, paintings, and sculptures of animals. Since then, I have continued to illustrate for Human Rights publications and children's books.
